About Kwangyul Peck

Introduction

Kwangyul Peck has expertise in the Canadian economy as well as international economies. He served as an Economic Advisor to Prime Minister Paul Martin during his tenure as Minister of Finance for Canada.

Kwangyul has advised governments on both sides of the Pacific on economic issues and contributed to local development through his participation in and support of small businesses. He intends to draw on this considerable experience to help serve Canadians nationally and locally, within the communities of Port Moody, Westwood and Port Coquitlam.

Professional Experience

Kwangyul's knowledge and experience in economics is extensive. He has appeared on national television and radio numerous times to discuss the international economy and he has written for periodicals, including The Globe and Mail , on such topics.

As the Vice President of an economic policy consultancy firm in Ottawa, he devised and analyzed economic strategies for both government and businesses. In 1992, Kwangyul joined the Park Georgia Group in Vancouver as its Chief Economist and Vice President. He devised the Group's investment portfolio and was responsible for developing a hotel project in Whistler, B.C.

Kwangyul now owns and manages an economic policy consultancy firm, K. Peck & Associates Ltd., which has provided analyses of Asia Pacific political economies to global financial institutions including the George Soros Group, one of the largest global investment groups. He also manages the K wangyul Peck Fund Inc ., in Port Moody, which conceptualizes and devises sophisticated investment products such as options and derivatives for multinational financial institutions and security houses.

Education

Kwangyul was educated at various Canadian universities including McGill, Toronto , Bishops, and Carleton. After completing his Bachelor of Arts, he did graduate and post-graduate studies in economics at Carleton University .

He was appointed as a Visiting Scholar at the prestigious Centre for East-West studies in Seoul, Korea. There he undertook research on Canadian strategy and policy options regarding Asia Pacific political economies, which later became his consultancy specialty.

Kwangyul has published over one hundred articles in a variety of news journals regarding international political economy, even serving as an Economics Columnist for a highly respected daily Asian business newspaper.

Personal

Having immigrated to Canada with his family at age 17, Kwangyul understands the unique challenges facing new immigrants.

In addition to speaking Korean and English, he has also learned some French, Cantonese, Mandarin, German and Japanese. He has delivered speeches in French, as he did during his nomination last March, and is able to read and write nearly 1,000 Chinese characters.

Between academic degrees, Kwangyul worked and traveled in Paris, London and New York. He holds a particular fondness for his time in New York as a vegetable delivery truck driver. The constant wear and tear of lifting heavy boxes full of vegetables resulted in the temporary loss of his fingerprints.

He presently resides in Port Moody with his wife Sonia, his daughter Ki-eun, and son Ki-seon.

Community Involvement

Kwangyul has also been involved with local small businesses. In addition to running his own businesses, he has volunteered with the Korean Business Co-operative Association (K.B.C.A.) as its spokesman and chief economist . He has been an active spokesperson and strong advocate of businessmen in the community. As a voice for small businesses, Philip Kim (President of the K.B.C.A.), had this to say about Kwangyul: "He helped us take on, and win, an issue with Gordon Campbell's provincial government that was very important to our economic livelihood."

As an avid soccer player, Kwangyul has played in a local men's league and enthusiastically supports Ki-eun's participation in the Port Moody Girls' Soccer League. Kwangyul also holds a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, and became an instructor of this martial art during his time as an undergraduate student.

Liberal Party Candidate for Member of Parliament
